This is a poem I wrote called
Verse 1
"This road I Know"
C
G
There's this flash I get often,
D
Em7
a fever dream or a vision of sorts
C
Most times late at night
G
And I haven't found out why,
D
Em7
but I know exactly why
C
I'm on this road and I hear gravel
G
underneath me and I feel it too
D
And I don't know where I am,
Em7
but I know exactly where I am
C
G
It's dark, It's really dark
D
And the car is warm but somehow I can feel
Em7
how cold the night is
C
I don't know where the road leads
G
D
Em7
but I know exactly where it ends
C
You see I keep driving
G
And all I see for the longest while
D
Em7
is my headlights, for an eternity it seems
C
G
And everything is desolate and empty
D
Em7
and nothing and hopeless
C
I'm lost but I know where I'm going
G
I'm safe, I'm warm, I'm driving
D
Em7
And I see this small light
C
A dim one, growing brighter and bigger
G
and closer and stronger
D
Em7
And the closer I get the more I see
C
G
I make out a house with light strewn across it,
D
a porch, and cars
Em7
Some frosted windshields
C
that haven't been touched for hours
G
I hear a song, and it's faint,
D
I can't make out the name
Em7
but i know every word
C
I feel my feet first,
G
and it's cold and there's crunching,
D
Em7
and its the sound of driveways
C
G
And the wind takes takes my breath with it
D
Then I walk up to this door and knock,
Em7
even though I feel I don't have to
C
And I don't know where I am
G
but I know exactly where I am
D
And this crack of light widens
G/B
on this porch underneath me
C
as this door opens
G
And this brown haired girl
D
with the brightest smile
Em7
I don't know who she is
Cadd9
but I know her so well
G
And behind her
D
the warmest home I'd ever seen
Em7
C
Its orange and comfortable, there's fire
G
and it's bulb lit
D
Em7
She says
Verse 2
C
"Where have you been?
G/B
I've been waiting for you all night,
D
we've missed you"
Em/D
She says through the kindest smirk
C
I've seen in so long
G/B
Then she tapers off the sentence
D
with the peaceful sound that a lady makes
Em/D
C
She grabs me on the forearms
G/F#
and pulls softly into the dining room
D
And there's people
Em7
and they're happy and content for one
C
I don't know who they are
G
but I know exactly who they are
D
And we're all standing
Em7
and I'm laughing at a joke I'll never hear again
C
I don't know where I am
but I know exactly where I am
G/B
And then she tucks her head
D
between my collar as a friend
Em7
C
Between my collar and my jaw
and there's no weight at all
G
And I don't know where I am
D
but there's no weight at all
Em7
It's laughter and greens
C
and no tomorrow to win
And I don't know where I am
G/B
D
Em7
but I know exactly where I am
I don't know where I am
but I know exactly where I am
