It was my
Em

13th summer.
Em
It was probably
A
Bm
Em
June. 32
Grant
Street down in
A
Colorado.
Em
An d I just remember, I was in my backyard,
A
Em
and it was the coolest backyard.
A
Em
It was just so simple, know, just,
B
A
Em
Bm
Em
you know, white painted, wooden fence around it.
A
Em
A big tall tree, really skinny, and,
E
Em
E
Em
the leaves were probably about 30 feet up.
And the grass was just so green.
A
We had tons of rose bushes in it.
Em
E
B
E
Em
An d, you know, right down the middle there was like this,
A
Em
A
Em
you know, probably about 8 to 10 rose bushes.
A
Em
A
and all around the edges there was tons of flowers, you know, black eyed seaweeds,
Em
D
Em
tulips, irises, more rose bushes, and all sorts of stuff, and it was really cool.
I really liked it.
A

And we had this swing set, and it was painted like, you know,
Em
A
a barbershop sort of thing, know, like, blue and white and red.
Kind of my younger brother when we used to play on it,
Em
and I was getting a bit old for it.
A
Em
But anyway, I was hanging out in the backyard,
A
Em
A
and my friend
Roxanne came over.
Her last name
Rose
Blue.
Roxanne
Rose
Em
A
E
Blue, where are you today,
B
Bm
B
I wonder.
E
F#
A
Em

And I always remember, like, her really being into boys,
Em
A
E
Em
G
A
Em
A
like, when we were about 11 or 12.
Em
E
Em
And I still wasn't really that remotely interested, in fact,
A
E
I just was still into sort of kids' stuff, you know?
Em
E
Em
So I just remember, I had finished elementary school,
E
Em
A
Em
E
A
and I was now going to junior high school.
G
So I'm leaning on the back of our house, and I remember it's one of those white,
A
G
Em
G
Em
F
Em
sort of wooden boarded houses, you know, like whitewashed.
E
A
F#
And I just remember looking up through the
A
F#
A
leaves of that tree and the sky was just so
blue.
E
Em
And the light, just that pretty white light,
A
E
Em
G
Em
A
F#
A
it makes you feel like completely transparent
C
A
an d everything's really
G
Em
D
pure and clean.
A
G
Gm
And like the leaves sort of like flickering,
G
E
know, kind of this green flicker.
Em
E
G
I just remember her sitting on a swing of
A
a swing and just telling me about what she's
up to.
She's sitting there talking to me,
Em
A
E
talking about her new boyfriend, this guy called
A
who's like half
Mexican and half
American
Indian.
Em
I mean, I'll meet them.
You know...
A
I'm trying to think about it.
Em
She was telling me about
G
how she'd gone to
Skate
A
City,
E
roller skating,
A
and I used to go there too.
And, um,
Em
anyway, she had gone up
A
there independently,
Em
and this guy already knew.
E
A
Em
Rather than going there to ice skate,
A
or not ice skate, to roller skate,
Em
he had said to me,
you know,
I want you to follow me.
E
A
And, you know, I'm sitting there,
D
you know,
A
E
leaning against the back of my house,
A
and I'm going,
Em
what the hell is she talking about?
A
Em
I have no clue.
A
Em
You know, something,
A
it was just really weird,
because if ever I think at one point
Em
in my whole life
A
E
that things change, like, a real subtle change,
G
Em
I just thought to myself,
G
E
why would anybody want to do that?
I don't understand.
You know, here I was,
A
you know, with this,
You know, sort of really naive,
kid's sort of way of thinking.
And here I had somebody telling
me about sexuality.
And you know something?
You know,
things just got a bit darker after that.
I think I forgot to ask somebody
first. was so shocked.
This is not how I imagined it.
