Let me tell y 'all what a furnished
merchant is.
A furnished merchant,
when I was a young 'un,

that bought soap by the carload
and flour by the carload.
He was a huge businessman.
His son graduated from high school,
decided he'd go up to Mississippi State University,

This merchant got up one Saturday
morning
and went out to
the store and it was closed
Great big sign on the front door
said closed for inventory
And this much it thought of
it said where is my boy?
This store ain't been closed in
50 years on a Saturday morning.
Some of my people may
need a can of snuff
get the store open a
Hey, little boy walked up and said,
Papa, I done got my degree in accounting now,
and you need to know
that it's necessary to close
this store to take inventory.
He said, Son, why do you want to take inventory,
he said, to figure out what
the profit is.
He said, let me tell you something,
me and your mama,
50 years ago,
sold eggs and got enough money
to buy one boat to claw.
And that's all we started with.
we sold cloth off of that boat.
Did you get a ladder and go to the far corner
of the store way over yonder
in the corner way up on the top shelf

and everything else is It's profit,
so get the store open.
