Adam lay a -dreamin'
beneath the apple tree
The an gel of the earth came down
and offered dust and feed
But Adam did not heed it,
nor the plough he would not speed
singing earth and water and fire.
What more can mortal man desire
than the apple trees in the barn?
As Adam lay dreaming
beneath the apple tree,
the an gel of the waters
offered all the seas in fear.
But Adam would not take them,
and the ships would not make them
Singing water, earth, and air, and fire
What more can mortal man desire?
The apple tree is in relief
And Adam lay dreaming
beneath the ap ple tree
The an gel of the air,
he offered all the air in the field
But Adam did not crave it,
nor the flight he would not brave it
Singing, air and water and fire
What more can mortal man desire
Than ap ple trees and bloom
As Adam lay a -dreaming
beneath the apple tree
The an gel of the fire rose up
and uttered words so deep
But he wished aflame and made it
And in Adam's heart he laid it
Singing fire, fire, burning fire
Stand up and reach your heart's desire,
the apple -blossom self.
Adam was a -workin'
outside of Eden's wall
He used the earth, he used the seas,
he used the air and oil,
and out of black disaster
he arose to be the master of earth and water,
air and fire.
But he never reached his heart's desire,
the apple trees cut down.
