Verse 1
Am
It happened one
day near December's end.
G
E
Two neighbors called on an old friend,
F
Am
And they found his shop,
so meager and lean,
E
Made gay with a thousand
boughs of green.
Am
And Conrad was sitting
with his face ashine,
G
When suddenly he stopped
E
as he stitched a twine,
F
And he said, O friends,
E
at dawn today,
Am
When the cock was crowing
the night away,
The Lord appeared in a dream to me,
And said, I'm coming, your guest to be.
So I've been busy,
with feet astir,
And strewing my shop with branches
of fir.
The table is spread,
G
and the kettle is shined,
E
And over the rafters the holly is twined.
F
Am
Now I'll wait for my Lord to appear,
E
And listen closely, so I will hear,
Am
his step as he nears my humble place
and I'll open the door
G
and look on his face.
E
F
So his friends went home
E
and left Conrad alone
Am
for this was the happiest day he'd known.
For long since his family had passed away
C
and Conrad had spent
Am
many a sad Christmas Day
G
but he knew with the Lord as
E
his Christmas guest
Am
this Christmas would
be the dearest and best.
E
So he listened with only
C
joy in his heart,
and with every sound
Am
he would rise with a start
G
E
and look for the Lord to be at his door
F
like the vision he'd had
E
a few hours before.
Am
So he ran to the window after
hearing a sound,
D
but all he could see on
Am
the snow -covered ground
was a shabby old beggar
whose shoes were torn
D
and all of his clothes were
Am
ragged and worn.
But Conrad was touched
and he went to the door,
and he said,
G
E
Your feet must be frozen and sore.
Am
F
Am
I have some shoes in my shop for you,
E
and a coat that'll keep you warmer,
too."
Am
So with a grateful heart,
the man went away,
G
E
but Conrad noticed the time of day,
F
E
and wondered what made the Lord so late
and how much longer he'd
Am
have to wait.
When he heard a knock,
he ran to the door,
but it was only a stranger once more,
a bent old lady with a shawl of black
with a bundle of kindling piled on her back.
C
She asked for only a place to rest,
Am
G
but that was reserved for
E
Am
Conrad's great guest.
F
But her voice seemed to plead,
Am
Don't send me away,
E
let me rest for a while
Am
on Christmas Day.
So Conrad brewed her a steaming cup
G
E
and told her to sit at the table and sup.
F
But after she left,
E
he was filled with dismay,
Am
for he saw that the hours were
slipping away.
And the Lord hadn't come
as he said he would,
F
Am
C
and Conrad felt sure he'd mis
understood.
Am
When out of the stillness
G
he heard a cry,
E
F
Am
Please help me and tell me where am I?
So again he opened his friendly door
E
Am
and stood disappointed as twice before.
C
Am
It was only a child
who'd wandered away
G
and was lost from her
E
Am
family on Christmas Day.
F
E
Again Conrad's heart was
heavy and sad,
Am
but he knew he should make
the little girl glad.
So he called her in
and he wiped her tears
and quieted all her childish fears.
Then he led her back to her home
once more.
F
Am
But as he entered his own darkened door,
he knew that the Lord
was not coming today,
G
E
for the hours of Christmas
F
had passed away.
Am
So he went to his room
E
and he knelt down to pray.
And he said, Dear Lord,
Am
why did you delay?
G
What kept you from coming to call on me?
E
F
E
For I wanted so much your face to see.
Am
When soft in the silence, a voice he heard,
Lift up your head,
for I kept my word.
Three times my shadow crossed your floor,
And three times I came
to your lowly door.
I was the beggar with bruised, cold feet,
And I was the woman
you gave something to eat.
I was the child on a homeless street.
Three times I knocked
and three times I came in
F
and each time I found the
E
warmth of a friend.
Am
Of all the gifts,
love is the best
and I was honored to be your Christmas guest.
