I did something a little weird
a couple years ago.
I went back into a show that I had done five years prior on Broadway
in 1999 to 2000. was so excited because I spent a year as Sally Bowles
in the Broadway revival of Cabaret.
That's the only revival,
as a matter of fact,
in Broadway history
to run longer than the original production.
It was very cool and five years later I got a phone call and they
said that they had decided to finally close this production
and would I come back and play Sally
once again.
So it was such an honor.
I got to be the final
Sally Bowles
in that amazing production.
But the weird thing was that when I was
doing Sally the second time,
I was cast in another Broadway show.
And the way the scheduling worked out
was that I literally closed Cabaret
on Sunday
and I started work as Millie
in Thoroughly Modern Millie on Monday.
Now, I don't know if you know those two shows,
but they're pretty much nothing
alike.
I mean, it was quite a transition
going from that light -hearted romp
that is Cabaret
into the deep, dark pathos
that is the mentality of Millie,
but I had such fun because Millie takes place
in my favorite era,
the 1920s,
and the show itself is such a Valentine
to New York City,
and it's a period of time
that I love
because really women were just
breaking through boundaries right and left.
Not everybody was happy about that,
but Millie Dillmount
certainly was excited about
it.
She moved from Salina, Kansas
all the way to New York City
to become thoroughly modern if it killed her.
