Tonalité : C major
Verse 1
G
C
I was out on the west coast
trying to make a buck,
Em
and the times were pretty hard.
F
I was down on my luck.
Well, I got tired of bumming
and roaming around,
G
so I decided I'd head back east,
C
back toward my hometown.
I made pretty good time
Em
the first couple of days.
Figured I'd be home in a week or so
F
if my luck held out this way.
But on the third night,
G
I got stranded away out of town
At a cold, crossroads
C

G
C
The rain was pouring down
Well, I was tired and hungry
Em
and I done caught a chill
When I saw the lights
F
of a semi atop the hill
Oh, I was sure glad to hear
G
that man's air brakes come on
And I climbed up into the cab
C
where I knew it'd be warm
Em
Inside said a big man, oh
I guess he weighed about 210
F
And he stuck out his hand
and said to the grin,
G
Big Joe's the name
And I told him mine,
and he said the name of my rig's
C
F
C
Am
C
Phantom 309
Well I asked him how he would come
Em
by a name like that for his old truck
He said son, this old Mack
F
will put them all to shame
There's not a rig or a driver
a -runnin' any line
G
To see nothin' but taillights
F
C
of the Phantom 309
Well, we rode and talked
Em
the better part of the night
And directly the lights of a truck stop
F
came into sight
He said, I'm sorry, son,
but this is as far as you go
G
You see, I've gotta make a turn
just a little further down the road
C
But he tossed me a dime
as he pulled her in the load
Em
Said, here,
go ahead and have yourself a hot cup
F
on old Big Joe.
Well, I stood and watched
as he pulled off into the night.
G
And in nothing flat,
C
he was clean out of sight.
Em
Well, I went in and ordered up a cup.
Told the waiter, Big Joe,
F
that's the man that set me up.
All the place got a deathly quiet.
G
And the face of the waiter
turned sort of a ghostly white.
C
Well, did I say something wrong?
I asked with a halfway grin.
And he said, no,
Em
this same thing happens now and then.
F
All the drivers in here know Big Joe,
but let me tell you what happened
G
just about ten years ago.
Back there at that same crossroads
C
where you flagged him down,
there was a busload of kids
returning from town.
Em
They were right in the middle
when Joe topped the hill,
and it would have been a slaughter,
F
but he turned his wheel.
They lost control and went into a skid,
G
and gave his life to save that
bunch of kids.
C
Yeah, right there was the end of the line
F
G
C
G
C
for Big Joe and Phantom 309.
But every now and then,
Em
a hiker will come by,
and just like you,
E
F
Big Joe will give them a ride.
So here, have another cup.
G
Just forget about the dime.
Keep it as a souvenir
of Big Joe

and the Phantom 309.
