Oh I sit and watch the canary singing in his cage from

But you see back in the early days,
before the tilly light was lit,
miners looked towards the birdcage
and the hero of the pit.
And the hero of the pit was
our little feathered friend.
And if that dreaded gas crept round,
his life would surely end.
He was put there for one reason.
It was sad, so it's been said,
but he saved the lives of
mining men by giving his instead.
Now the gas down in the tunnels, creeping underground,
could blow a pit to kingdom come, or flatten a mining town.
So watchful eyes were kept upon the bird while miners worked,

and if he showed signs of weakness, then dreaded gas they alert.

Some people say how cruel it was, to use in such a way,
a tiny sweet canary bird, and someone ought to pay.
But it was back before the safety lamp was invented and then lit,
so the miners' lives
depended on the heroes of the pit.
And the hero of the pit was our little feathered friend,
