Verse 1
G
The Fat Man man
F
sat on the busy street corner,
C
his white beard and red suit in rhyme.
G
D
And his ho -ho brought joy to the children,
G
D
for again it was Christmas time.
G
D
His belly would shake as he merrily laughed,
Spreading his Christmas joy.
G
Hey, I'm Santa, come sit on my knee,
F
And say to each little girl and boy.
C
But standing apart from
G
the merry crowd,
D
G
Stood a lad about seven years old,
D
With no coat to cover his bony frame,
G
He was shaky and weak from the cold.
D
G
D
He had no shoes
Em
D
to warm his feet.
He looked hungry, just skin and bone.
G
But with a look of peace on
his humble little face,
A
he just stood there alone.
When Santa saw the little boy,
his sympathy grew, and he'd say,
D
Come here, lad,
come here to me.
Em
And he covered the trembling frame
D
G
with his robe
F
as he placed the child on his knee.
C
The boy looked up to Santa's eyes,
G
was worshiping for the bearded man,
D
G
an d he said, My name is Billy,
D
and I love you, sir.
G
Why, you're the greatest in all the land.
Em
And I didn't mean to be no trouble,
Santa.
G
D
F
He went on, trying hard to smile.
But I heard you laughing,
C
and I saw the kids,
G
and I thought, I'd just watch for a while.
D
G
But I won't bother you with
wantin' nothing, sir,
Cause I already know I've been bad.
D
Santa looked down at the ragged boy
and he said, Son,
G
where is your mama and dad?
F
Well, my daddy lives in prison,
Santa,
C
And that's what mama says anyhow.
G
They say he shot mama's boyfriend.
He's been there a long time now.
D
And me and mama,
G
we live with Mr. Brown now.
D
Well, Mom works at the bar every day
Em
D
An d Mr. Brown just drinks beer
And he cusses a lot
G
whenever I get in his way
D
G
So I've been gone about four days now,
Santa I've been sleepin'
A
in cars that I find
And I know that already
makes me a bad boy
D
But you sure been treatin' me kind
G
I've been prayin' for you
since I've been big enough,
F
Santa every Christmas Eve night
C
and the kids have all their toys
G
D
G
and I know that you made it all right now
D
I'm so glad to see them so happy
G
as I go walking along
but my stocking is always empty
Em
D
G
and that's how I know I've done
F
wrong well mr. Brown told me all about it
C
he said I just ain't good
G
and I know he's right
cuz you never came sir
D
G
and I know if I wasn't bad
D
and you would it's okay son
Santa muttered such face
Em
D
G
he hadn't seen in a while
F
the old tear was straining to fill his eyes
C
he looked down at the lad with a smile
G
just tell Santa what you like son
anything you might have in mind
D
I didn't know where you lived before,
G
but I promise I will not miss
you next time.
D
Em
D
Little Billy's face quickly grew brighter.
Such luck he would never have guessed.
G
After thinking a while,
he finally said, Sir,
Em
I might have just one request.
A
Em
A
Have you ever been to heaven, Santa?
D
I bet you know God as good as you are.
Em
D
Could I just ride up to Jesus' house, sir,
G
If it's not too awful far,
F
C
he might let me live there for a while.
G
Daddy says he likes little boys.
D
And I wouldn't take up
G
too much room, sir.
D
I'd just sit in the back with the toys.
G
D
And I promised not to be bad, Santa.
G
Em
And I could help God do his chores.
G
And he might even let me see Daddy.
F
And I wouldn't be hungry no more.
C
I'm so tired and sleepy now, Santa,"
G
said the child as he looked
toward the sky.
D
With a sigh,
G
he relaxed against Santa's chest
D
and peacefully closed his eyes.
G
The old man quickly felt
F
for the little boy's pulse.
C
Someone please get a doctor, he said.
G
But when the ambulance took
little Billy away,
D
G
everyone knew he was dead.
The children had grown more silent
Em
G
as they listened to the little boy.
F
They were no longer happy and laughing,
C
G
his story had stolen their joy.
They looked to Santa for comfort
D
G
and he fought for the right words to say.
D
He said, now kids,
don't be sad for Billy,
cause he just went to
G
heaven today.
F
He wanted to go and live with God,
C
so now everything's alright.
G
Let thoughts of Billy
make your heart be kind,
D
and I'll see you all Christmas Eve's night.
G
Merry Christmas, everybody.
Em
D
